The registration for the 2012 Hands-On Research in Complex Systems School in Shanghai is now OPEN, see flyer .
The aim of the camp is to engage teenage girls in a hands-on experience in the STEM disciplines, combining lectures, tutorials, experiments and field activities in an environment designed to be supportive, enriching and most importantly - fun! Check out our flyer !!
TEDxWiserU was an independently organized TED event held at Peking University in Beijing on August 21, 2010. The theme of the TEDx event was Reimagining Tomorrow's Education. EMS spoke about interdisciplinary education. You can watch the talk here: http://www.tudou.com/playlist/playindex.do?lid=10208017&iid=59536270&cid=25

The Hands-On Research in Complex Systems Schools are designed to introduce graduate students and young faculty from developing countries to table-top scientific research on problems at the frontiers of science. Experiments on physical, chemical, and biological systems are conducted with modern yet inexpensive digital instrumentation, and the laboratory work is complemented by mathematical modeling and data analysis using Matlab.
Each day for two weeks, small groups of 4-5 participants and two instructors work closely together. The close interactions lead to subsequent exchange visits and scientific collaborations. The participants are able to introduce new tools and demonstrations into the classroom and teaching laboratories, and to use these new tools in their own research. Thus the Hands-On Schools foster the development of scientific leaders in less developed countries.
EMS participated in the PRS 2009 and won the 2nd prize for her poster on "Regeneration, reproduction and growth in planarians". There were about 150 people attending, including alumni, high school students, and other members of the Princeton community. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive with many finding the presentations "intellectually stimulating" and "refreshingly diverse."
Useful materials for outreach activities:
Excellent freeware programs for doing science
Many excellent freeware programs exist on the web that
can replace expensive software often used in science. This
list
is in no way
complete -- and I am grateful for anybody who will send me
an email to add additional programs -- but
it is a start!
this is on the way.....
Science in Africa:
We are currently in the planning phase of a science camp for high school girls in Buea, Cameroon (for May 2011).
